How to increase lifespan of thinkpad battery?
In the next 3 minutes, you are going to learn in 4 simple steps how to make your Thinkpad battery last for years!
The Power manager is a utility that can be downloaded from Lenovo website. It can significantly enhance the life of your laptop battery. I have been using the same battery for almost 6.5 years! Still getting a backup of 2 hours on normal usage and 2.5 hours on reduced usage.
Here's how to use it:
- Download the 'power manager' from Lenovo website for your model
- Open the power manager and if it is in Basic mode, click to change to Advanced mode.
- Click on 'battery maintenance'
- Now change the charge threshold between 60-75% to increase lifespan of thinkpad battery. Though you can make it 100% on occasions when you need maximum battery backup.
This method works wonders for your battery. The battery life gets deteriorated due to two main factors that are controlled here:
1. Overcharging - without app, battery will be charged to 100%, thereby decreasing the lifespan
2. Cycle count : every time your battery charges & discharges beyond a threshold, one cycle of charge is completed. If you have more number of cycles, the battery life will decrease.
While using this setting, just plug in your charger and leave it. Battery won't be charged beyond the set value and 0.00A current will flow into the battery as shown in the second screenshot of thinkpad battery status.

Other factors:
- Temperature of battery : If you are living in a hot place then better watch the temperature of your battery and invest a little money in even a basic cooling pad. It will eventually help you get a extend the lifetime for your thinkpad battery.
- Depth of Discharge : Recharge your battery with small discharges of 10-50% and that will help your battery serve for more number of such cycles. If you wait for your battery indicator light to go RED /ORANGE then you are significantly reducing the service life.
- Reset the battery once a while : There is an option of resetting the battery and you should do it once a while (in a month or two). This helps not just in making it last for more years also,it helps the battery guage to display the capacity accurately.

I downloaded power manager and see the files on my computer. So, how do I "open" power manager?
ReplyDeleteYou need to install the 'Power manager' utility and then you can just search for the same in programs list in start menu. Usually, you will see a larger(green) battery icon next to notification area, clicking that will also open the power manager. Else just right click on taskbar and select--> Toolbars--> POwer manager to show power manager.
