Why you should NOT buy a Lumia?
Though this article takes the example of Lumia, it concerns all the windows phone out there even the innocent looking HTC ones. With all it's promising 'user interface' and bells and whistles, it falls flat of any expectation. A device which is neither made for the non-techie users nor for the techies. It is very difficult to operate for those who don't like to fiddle a lot with their phones. Windows OS 8.1 is somewhat better than 7 and 8 but even then it is full of useless menus and buttons. To all the respondents I have asked, have reported some or the other problems with the most basic functions. Even sharing internet on a Lumia device is a pain in the *ss. After a few minutes of inactivity it will get disconnected and if you're working on your laptop at some other room then you need to reconfigure the internet sharing on the Lumia and re-enable it. When compared to the seamless sharing from Android phones it seems like a very bad idea to use a windows phone as a 3G device. The bundled internet explorer is better to be kept bundled up as it is a piece of garbage. It does work on 3G and you may be able to do some basic work but in 2G it is a rat that is trying to swim in murky waters.
Apps are no different, being cut from the same cloth, they share the same faulty windows DNA. Slow and buggy. The moment you think that your problems will get solved by some miracle update, it makes things from worse to worst. The tiles may look appealing initially but once you them for a while, you will need to go through the small arrow button at the bottom that will bring you to the dreaded menu that never seems to end and contains everything at the same place.
Also don't fall for the OFFICE 365 hype. It is useful no doubt but then it is not the only savior in the world that will save your day by allowing you to work with MS Office files. Kingsoft Office on Android can do the same task without much ado about nothing.
If you talk about camera centric models like 1020, then obviously they do offer very good imaging quality but don't fall for the megapixel gimmick. Even if Nokia claims that it has 41megapixels, in real world results both in photo and video LG G2, iPhone, Sony Z1, Z2 are almost equal with variations only in post processing color and tonality. . Another thing to remind you that the TV commercial for Lumia camera-phones was found to be a work of forgery with the actual shots taken by rigged professional cameras. More importantly if image quality matters that much to you then you will buy a DSLR not a handheld cellphone with tiny sensor and glass.
Though the performance on higher models are much better than the lazy 5XX and 6XX series still there's a cheaper and better alternative for every LUMIA model in the market.
