What is an unlocked phone?

The unlocked phones are those that can be used with any telecom operator, as per the wish of the user. Whereas the locked phones have been made such that it works with only one operator.

Though locked phones may appear to be not a flexible option but they do offer certain advantages :

  1. The upfront cost for purchase is lower, as the phones are available at subsidized rate and there is a montly subscription charge, which covers the contract
  2. May offer certain plans like unlimited calling to certain or all numbers. Free data and or roaming services, etc.

And here are some of the disadvantages of a locked phone:

  1. Sometimes, there may be problems in roaming, especially when going to places that are not covered by the network. You cannot simply change the SIM as you can do in an unlocked phone. The SIM will be rejected by the phone.
  2. Overall, they are more expensive than unlocked phones, due to the minimum contract period commitment, for which the

total ownership cost = down payment + (montly subscription charges)x(number of months)
