Is it necessary to 'safely eject' USB drive (pen drive) every time?

Short answer : No

Long answer : Well, first let's see why you are asked to do so. Whenever you plug in your USB drive ( thumb drive or pendrive ), the operating system takes control over it. Any data transfers and communication between the device and computer takes place by the operating system. In most of the cases, the devices are not fast enough as compared to the Bus of your laptop or Mac or PC so your Windows/Mac/Linux maintains a cache, which is like a temporary storage and uses it to complete the writing of data to your USB drive smoothly, even when the writing speed fluctuates or slows down. Now the problem is that sometimes the progress bar may show that the transfer is completed but there may be some data in write cache, which may get lost ! So to be 100% safe remove after safely ejecting the drive. Moreover, in most of the cases, this is not needed because the modern OS will handle this effortlessly and flash drives (pen drives, USB drives) are fast enough that even if this delay is there, it will be in milliseconds. And yes, never remove the drive while it is still copying data.
