What is cc of an engine?

CC stands for cubic centimetres. It essentially is a measure of volume. In contexts other than automotive, it is used as a measure of liquids or gases.

Coming back to automotives, it is the volume of air that piston displaces in entire combustion process. An engine cylinder has some volume , a part of which forms the site of burning of fuel and here the maximum volume of the site is same as cubic capacity of engine. 

If we have to calculate the total displacement of an engine, we may use this formula:



D = (π/4)B²SN

where D is total displacement in cc
B is the bore of the engine in cm
S is the stroke cm
N is number of cylinder





To measure the bore of the engine, we can use telescopic probes as shown below:





Imagine a stack of wood in fire. If we want to cook faster, we add more logs to the fire so that it burns quickly. In the same manner, when we burn more fuel, more energy we get and faster the car goes. There is almost a direct relationship between cc of engine and power of car and inverse relationship with fuel economy(mileage).
